So tomorrow I’m preaching at Valley. I’m sure many of you have heard me rant about preaching before…about how the vast majority of listeners walk away remembering only a catch phrase at best…about how you will find no where else in our culture where a person stands and lectures to a crowd for an hour week are week…about how the passive nature of listening to a sermon contributes to our celebrity culture in the church and the infant nature of the church (we are spiritual babies always needing to be fed)…about how it is the primary way pastors are rated, but maybe one of the least effective things they do…about how I’m not sure our understanding of preaching is the same as the New Testament understanding of preaching.
Yeah, I got issue with preaching.
So tomorrow I’m going to try something different. We are going to do a group activity. The pews will work against. I don’t think the congregation has done anything like this before; and I’m not sure how I’m going to coordinate 100 people to group interaction…but I’m going for it. The goal is 10 minutes of lecture / 35 minutes of group interaction.
Time to put my money where my mouth is.
I’ll let you know how it goes.
